OAKLAND, CA — For sheer beauty, butterflies are like floating impressionist paintings flitting among flowers in backyards and gardens.

Patch reader Sharon Boyd shared this photo of a swallowtail butterfly that she snapped at the Botanical Gardens at Lake Merritt, Oakland. There are more than 550 species of swallowtails living on every continent except Antarctica.
