Swallowtail Butterfly At The Botanical Gardens: Photo Of The Day

OAKLAND, CA — For sheer beauty, butterflies are like floating impressionist paintings flitting among flowers in backyards and gardens.

Patch reader Sharon Boyd shared this photo of a swallowtail butterfly that she snapped at the Botanical Gardens at Lake Merritt, Oakland. There are more than 550 species of swallowtails living on every continent except Antarctica.

The Gardens at Lake Merritt are 7 acres of tranquil, themed gardens. Admission is free! The garden include:
