PLEASANTON, CA — An 18-year-old from Pleasanton was killed after he and his friend were shot in Hayward on June 27, Hayward police confirmed.

Police said that the 18-year-old sustained critical injuries after he was shot near Mission Boulevard and Industrial Parkway. He was transported to a medical facility for treatment, and remained on life support until Wednesday.

This incident marks the sixth homicide of Hayward in 2024, according to the Hayward Police Department.

“Denis Bautista, a young man of just 18 years old, has left us a great void in the hearts of his family, friends and loved ones. Sadly, his life was taken from him and thus ended his dreams at such a young age. A month ago he graduated from high school and had many goals and dreams to fulfill. His family is going through great pain and needs help with medical and funeral expenses,” said the page, which has raised $25,274.

There are still no suspects in custody as of Thursday, according to Hayward police. Police also said that preliminary evidence suggests that this was not a random act of violence. Police do not believe that the homicide from the day prior, in which a 15-year-old from Rodeo was killed and a 13-year-old from Hayward was seriously injured, are related, though the case continues to be under active investigation.

“Any loss of life is heartbreaking, and the loss of such young members of our community is even more difficult to comprehend,” Hayward Police Chief Bryan Matthews said in a statement. “Our thoughts go out to the family and loved ones of the victims in this incident. While no words can heal the pain of losing a loved one, we want to assure the community that we are working tirelessly on this investigation to ensure that those responsible for this tragic event are brought to justice and that closure can be brought to the victim’s families.”
