Old West tales of El Casco and Frink Adobe&nbsp;
On Thursday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m., the <a href="https://sgphs.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">San Gorgonio Pass Historical Society</a> will host a free program exploring San Timoteo Canyon’s Frink Adobe and El Casco presented by Pete Dangermond and Jim Shipp, both representing the Two Canyons Conservancy. 
 “We will look at the history of the Frink family, the westward journey of Horace Monroe Frink, and his freighting and ranching history with his brother, John, as they hauled silver from Arizona mines to San Jose,” said Shipp, who will also explain the significance of the Frink Adobe and heritage orange grove. 
 Dangermond will describe the work of <a href="https://twocanyonsconservancy.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Two Canyons Conservancy</a>, which is preserving natural land in San Timoteo and Live Oak Canyons. “The Frink Ranch, known as El Casco, is a keystone of the conservancy, along with the Frink Adobe,” added Shipp. 
 The program is open to all and will be held at the Beaumont Woman’s Club Community Center, 306 E. 6th St., Beaumont. In “The Latino/a Sporting History of the Inland Empire,” Dr. José Alamillo will share the untold stories of Latino and Latina athletes, teams and leagues, and their supporters, who all fought for a more level playing field in the Inland Empire. José M. Alamillo is professor of Chicana/o Studies at California State University, Channel Islands (Camarillo, CA). Dr. Alamillo is an expert on Mexican American cultural history with a focus on labor, immigration, gender, leisure, and sports. Celebrate Asian culture under a full moon! Moon festivals are celebrated throughout Asia with moon cakes, lanterns, and gratitude for friends and family. The festivals originated with the ancient tradition of honoring the moon in autumn for the harvest. The Moon Festival at Heritage House marks the importance of Chinese Americans in building Riverside’s citrus industry. Join us for an evening of storytelling by Barbara Wong, performances by Gió Nam Múa Lân (Southern Wind Lion Dance), Chinese calligraphy demonstrations by Riverside’s Hua Xia Chinese School, mah-jongg games and a fun craft for all ages. Moon cakes will be available for purchase. Hope to see you there! EVENT IS FREE! Maria Carrillo Colato will present a free program on “The March Toward Civil War in Southern California,”1850-1865,&nbsp;when the Inland Empire Civil War Round Table meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17 at the A.K. Smiley Public Library, 125 W. Vine St., Redlands. The public is welcome.&nbsp;Social time begins at 6 p.m.
The program also will livestream. The link, which opens at 6:15 that night, is at: <a href="https://www.inlandempirecwrt.org/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">inlandempirecwrt.org</a>. The recording will be posted on the website shortly thereafter.
Maria is Special Collections Manager for the library and the adjacent Lincoln Memorial Shrine, a civil war museum and research facility dedicated to Abraham Lincoln. She is a doctoral candidate, focusing on California in the Civil War-era, at the University of California, Riverside. 
According to Maria, “From its admission in the Union as a free state in 1850, through the start of the conflict, California factored greatly into the march toward civil war. Controlled politically by Southern Democrats, and far from the center of power in the east, the Golden State became a beacon for the expansion of Southern culture in the antebellum period.
“In Southern California, where a unique Californio culture reigned, migrants from the American South formed strategic alliances with southern Californians to stake their claim as leaders of the new sociopolitical order,” says Maria, who invites her audience to “learn how the unlikely alliance between Southerners and Californios brought California to the brink of disunion as the war loomed on the horizon.”
Maria has a Bachelor of Arts in History from California State University, Fullerton; and a Master of Arts from UCR in History, with an emphasis in Public History.
As a graduate student, Maria completed an internship with the National Park Service at Fort Donelson National Battlefield in Dover, Tennessee, where she had “the privilege of living in the Surrender House, where Simon Bolivar Buckner surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant, the terms of which earned the latter the famous ‘Unconditional Surrender’ moniker.”
Maria currently serves on the Editorial Board of the journal, Civil War History and as Archivist of the Board of Directors of the nonprofit Society for Women and the Civil War.
She has coauthored Images of America: Early Redlands&nbsp;and Redlands in World War I; and has worked in museums and special collections in Southern California for nearly 20 years.
