SAN LEANDRO, CA — San Leandro Mayor Pauline Russo Cutter announced on Thursday that the city has launched a new online volunteer hub where community residents can register to serve as volunteers to help people in need during the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Cutter said initially the volunteer opportunities will be focused on food banks or other organizations that are dedicated to helping the community respond to COVID-19.

"I have heard from many San Leandro residents who are looking for ways to volunteer their time to help others impacted by the extremely challenging circumstances we are currently facing," Cutter said in a statement. "Many of our local nonprofit organizations also have shared with me a high-priority need for volunteers," she said.

Cutter said, "That's why I am thrilled to announce the launch of our Kindness Network website that will help connect volunteers with local organizations that need support. I am calling on any residents who have available time on their hands and who are healthy enough to help others to please consider signing up."

San Leandro officials said registration is simple and easy because prospective volunteers can simply click on the "Sign Up" button that appears on the home screen and follow the prompts.

The initial phase of the program will focus on providing meals or groceries to those in need.

But Cutter said that over time the online hub will be expanded to support additional services, including city departments, nonprofits and community-serving opportunities where volunteers are needed.

The city said volunteers will be required to practice strict social-distancing and cleanliness standards to protect against the spread of the coronavirus.
