SANTA MONICA, CA — Funnel cakes reign among top treats at California county fairs, carnivals and boardwalks. But even though coronavirus woes led to the plug being pulled this year on most summer fairs, along with the shuttering of some oceanfront amusement areas — there's no need to despair.

Pacific Park in Santa Monica has shared with Patch the recipe for its signature funnel cakes, a dessert first introduced to America by the Dutch in the late 1800s, according to funnel-cake lore. The name derives from the method of pouring batter through a funnel into hot oil.

At Santa Monica's Pacific Park, funnel cakes are served at Funnel Cakes and Scoops Ice Cream and Treats and can be topped with powdered sugar, strawberries, whipped cream or a scoop of Lappert’s Ice Cream. The pier currently is closed to the public due to COVID-19 mandates. Follow along here for reopening details.
