UNION CITY, CA — Schools in Union City will remain closed through the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year, the New Haven Unified School District superintendent told parents and the community at large on Thursday.

In a letter released to the public, John Thompson outlined how virtual learning will progress through the end of the school year. The issue of graduation for this year's senior class was not addressed.

Dear New Haven Community,

I am announcing that all New Haven Unified schools will remain closed for the remainder of this school year for in-person instruction. This decision is in alignment with the statement from Alameda County Superintendent of Schools, L. Karen Monroe that all K-12 schools in Alameda County remain closed for in-person instruction for the rest of the school year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Our students and staff will continue to engage in Remote Learning through the end of next week, April 10. Beginning Monday, April 13, we will be transitioning to a more robust Virtual Learning model. We will continue to revise and refine how we serve our students through this extended school closure period.

We are working to determine the full impact of this decision including how credit will be assigned, what alternatives (if any) we can provide for traditional end of the year events, and what summer school will be offered. We are reviewing the guidance we have received from State and other agencies and will provide additional information as soon as possible.

Beginning Tuesday, April 7, the District will begin the distribution of chromebooks and other instructional technology necessary for students to engage in Virtual Learning. To request a chromebook, please click here.

We will continue to update and inform our community in a timely manner regarding any changes.

Thank you for your patience as we work together to prevent the spread of COVID-19. I hope you and your family stay safe.

Sincerely,

John Thompson

Superintendent
