VENICE, CA — Police Tuesday asked the public to help identify a driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run in Venice, releasing surveillance video of the car speeding away after crashing into a woman on a bicycle.

The fatal hit-and-run happened about 3:05 a.m. Aug. 20 near Pacific and Rose avenues, according to the Los Angeles Police Department West Traffic Division.

The cyclist was apparently riding in circles in the middle of the intersection when she was struck, police said. The vehicle continued driving northbound on Pacific Avenue without stopping, which is required by law.

It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in this collision, police said. The investigation is ongoing.

"The identity of the pedestrian will not be released at this time pending notification to next of kin," police said.

Any driver who is involved in a collision should pull over and stop as soon as it's possible and safe to do so, notify emergency services and stay at the scene to identify who they are, police said.

On April 15, 2015, the City Council amended the Los Angeles Administrative Code and created a Hit and Run Reward Program Trust Fund. A reward of up to $50,000 is available to community members who provide information leading to the offender’s identification, apprehension, and conviction or resolution through a civil compromise.

Anyone with information about the hit-and-run can call police at 213- 473-0236 or 213-473-0234; 877-LAPD-247; or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
