CONTRA COSTA COUNTY — Another 26 coronavirus cases were confirmed in Contra Costa County on Thursday, Contra Costa Health Services reports, but no new deaths have occurred. The death toll stands at 3.

California has 10,000 confirmed cases as of the noon hour on Thursday, according to Johns Hopkins University, and 216 deaths. However, the death toll does not include Alameda County's most recent death so the figures are lagging a bit. Alameda County's death toll is now 9.

The US death toll rose to 5,648, as reported during the noon hour on Thursday, with total confirmed cases surpassing 236,000.

Meanwhile, two weeks after the Bay Area first announced a "shelter-in-place" order to help slow the spread of the new coronavirus, health officials believe the proactive move may have helped the region avoid a disastrous surge in COVID-19 patients.

Doctors at hospitals around the Bay Area are treating fewer cases than they expected to see after two weeks — the maximum time it takes for people infected with the virus to start showing symptoms — and many believe the lockdown is responsible for "flattening the curve" of the virus, POLITICO reported.

The shelter-in-place has been disastrous for many workers, as some one million Californians filed for unemployment benefits in just a two week period.
