CONNECTICUT — Coronavirus hospitalizations in the state jumped by 94 over the weekend, double the totals from the past few weeks, Gov. Ned Lamont said Monday. Also, 3,338 new coronavirus cases were announced.

Use of hospital intensive care unit facilities for COVID-19 patients was up 50 percent, Lamont said. Another 27 deaths attributed to the virus were reported since Friday, bringing the state's death toll to 4,698.

"These numbers are concerning, and reflective of what is going on around the country," the governor said. He praised Connecticut colleges and universities that have adopted stricter restrictions to curb the spread of the virus.

Despite the spike in patients, hospitals across the state still have plenty of capacity, according to Lamont. He said he expects a decline in deaths and hospitalizations when a new vaccine from Pfizer is released.

Demand for coronavirus testing has increased. An additional 89,686 residents were tested for the virus over the weekend and there was a 3.7 percent positive rate.
