CT COVID-19 Case Rates, Hospitalizations, School Cases On Rise

CONNECTICUT — Many of Connecticut’s COVID-19 metrics are moving in the wrong direction, including a noticeable increase in student and staff COVID-19 cases as schools get back from April break.

Connecticut reported 5,531 cases over seven days, which is the highest seven-day total since the state switched case reporting methods in early April.

There were 233 admitted hospital patients with COVID-19 as of Thursday, which was the highest number since Feb. 25.COVID-19 hospitalizations increased by 23 patients from Wednesday to Thursday. Still, COVID-19 hospitalizations are far below the nearly 2,000 net patients in January.

Connecticut reported 14 additional COVID-19 deaths over the past week, which brought the state total up to 10,840.

Cases among students, staff on rise

Reported cases among students and staff (search by school here) increased in the past week as many students returned from spring break. State Department of Public Health officials warned school administrators that an increase in cases was likely for the next few weeks, according to the Connecticut Post.

There were 627 cases among staff and 1,653 among students from Thursday, April 21 to Wednesday, April 27; there were 382 staff cases and 1,100 cases among students in the prior seven-day reporting period.

The number of weekly cases among students and staff was the highest it has been since early February. Still, cases are a far cry from the peak in January.
