Farmington Obituary: John Legowski, 97

Condolences to his family and friends.

John Theodore Legowski, 97, of Unionville, faithful husband and beloved father, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, Feb 1 following a long, rich and enthusiastic journey.

John began life in Collinsville, one of 8 children born to recent immigrants, Jan and Marianna (Piwnicki) Legowski. He attended the two-room elementary school at Sand Bank Hill Road in Burlington, and the Canton High School. He held many odd jobs, starting at age 8 (stove lighter at school) and continuing in earnest upon the sudden death of his father in 1937, taking a job as machine operator at the Bristol Brass Corporation in 1939, and finally retiring as General Foreman in 1986.

In 1946, John married his sweetheart, Bruna Marie Bonini, at St Mary Star of the Sea in Unionville. Theirs was a long and admirable marriage, the memory of which John cherished since Bruna’s death in 2013.

A longstanding communicant of St Mary Star of the Sea parish, John was honored to serve for many years as a Eucharistic Minister. He was a Third Degree Knight of Columbus and a member, as well as one-time Treasurer, of the Unionville Lions Club.

John leaves his son and loving caretaker, John (TJ) Legowski Jr of Unionville, his two daughters, Louise Legowski of Brooklyn, NY and Teresa Marshall of Conifer CO, and their spouses, Harold Strickland and David Marshall, and his three grandsons, Samuel Strickland, Patrick Marshall and Matthew Marshall. John is also survived by three sisters, Wanda Karpo of Avon, Marion LaPlante of Tallahassee, FL, and Martha Holinka of Lincolnton, NC, his brother and wife, Edward and Charlotte Legowski of Farmington, cousin Helen (Piwnicki) Grocki of Avon, sisters/brothers-in-law, Elsie Tallmadge, Eleanor Parsons, Elizabeth Faitella, Arnold, James and Henry Bonini, and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the Home Hospice Care staff of Farmington Valley VNA for their kind and compassionate care.

Friends and family may call at the Ahern Funeral Home, 111 Main St, Unionville on Friday February 9 from 5-8pm. Funeral procession will be Saturday February 10 at 9am followed at 10am by the Funeral Mass at the Church of St Mary Star of the Sea, Unionville. Burial will be in St Mary Cemetery, Avon.
