GREENWICH, CT — DeCicco & Sons, the New York-based supermarket chain with 11 locations in Westchester County, is planning on opening its first Connecticut store in the space formerly occupied by Stop & Shop in the Glenville section of Greenwich.

The Greenwich Planning & Zoning Commission is slated to hold a pre-application review on the proposal on Tuesday. The pre-application process generally allows for a non-binding discussion with the commission about the pros and cons of a proposal.

The Glenville Stop & Shop at 21 Glenville St., closed in June 2023.

Last year at the request of Sutton Land LLC, the property owner, the Planning & Zoning Commission rezoned a rear portion of the site to allow for more parking to attract a new grocery store tennant. A site plan was approved to add 61 new parking spaces to the Glenville Plaza shopping center.

"The owner is pleased to announce that a lease has been signed with DeCicco & Sons for them to open a new store at the shopping center," said Thomas J. Heagney, the attorney representing the applicant, in documents on file with the town.

As part of renovating the existing supermarket space, Heagney said DeCicco & Sons is looking to add a new rear entrance, an enclosed loading dock and cooler and refrigeration space to the building.

"As part of creating a rear entrance, a reconfiguration of the rear parking lot is also proposed," Heagney added.

While the Greenwich Planning & Zoning Commission still needs to grant approval, First Selectman Fred Camillo expressed excitement about DeCicco & Sons signing a lease agreement.

"The long awaited anchor store is finally here for the people of Glenville. I want to thank everybody involved in the negotiations and wish DeCicco & Sons a very long and successful stay here at their new home in Greenwich," Camillo told Patch. "I know I can’t wait to become a frequent visitor to their store."

Glenville Plaza has seen new tenants move in recently, with Luca's Pizzeria and Italian Kitchen and Sweet Notes, an ice cream shop, opening in recent months. Green & Tonic is scheduled to open at the shopping center later this year.

DeCicco & Sons was founded in 1973 by John DeCicco Sr., according to the company's website. The business began as a small grocery store in the Bronx, N.Y.

"For over 50 years, DeCicco & Sons has had a proud history of bringing the largest selection of high-quality food available to customers with a friendly, personal touch," the company's website says. "This simple, unwavering mentality has enabled the company to expand throughout Putnam and Westchester Counties."

There are now 10 stores open throughout Westchester in Ardsley, Armonk, Bedford, Brewster, Eastchester, Harrison, Larchmont, Millwood, Pelham and Somers. An 11th store in Sleepy Hollow is listed as "coming soon."

DeCicco & Sons also says on its website that the company is "involved in several civic and community-related events, regularly working with schools, town organizations, churches, and the Chamber of Commerce groups."

Tuesday's Greenwich Planning & Zoning Commission meeting is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., via Zoom. The agenda and Zoom link can be found here.
