Student, 5, and Teacher Bitten by Loose Dog in School: Hamden Police

HAMDEN, CT — A 5-year-old student and a teacher were injured after being bitten by a dog that got loose inside of Helen Street School on Wednesday morning, according to police.

Police and the Hamden Animal Control Division responded to the school, located at 285 Helen Street, at about 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 15 on the report of a dog bite.

Capt. Ronald Smith said investigation revealed that Leon Mitchell, 46, of Hamden, was transporting his child to school.

“Upon arrival, Mitchell’s 7-month-old American Bulldog escaped from his vehicle and entered the school,” Smith said in a press release. “Once inside, the canine bit a 5-year-old student in the leg. A teacher attempted to gain control of the canine. She too was bitten and sustained an injury to her finger.”

Smith said another teacher was successful in removing the dog from the child.

The 5-year-old student was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital for medical treatment.

The Animal Control Division has transported the dog to the North Haven Animal Shelter for an off-property quarantine, according to Smith.

Smith said the dog will be quarantined at the shelter for a state-mandated 14 days. The Animal Control Division is continuing the investigation.
