Driver Charged After Burnouts In Classic Car At Middletown Event

MIDDLETOWN, CT — A classic car owner is facing several criminal charges after performing burnouts near a crowd of pedestrians at Middletown's 27th Annual Cruise Night on Main Street, police said.

The event took place on June 12. Hundreds of cars traditionally line Main Street for the event from Washington Street to the South Green.

The show benefits Middletown youth programs, including the Hal Kaplan Middletown Mentor Program, Middletown Recreation Programs and the Middletown Summer Youth Employment Program.

According to a preliminary investigation, at 7:46 p.m., as he was about to leave the show, a 64-year-old Durham man in a Chevrolet Nova began spinning his tires and performing fish tale maneuvers in close proximity to about 30 spectators.

The smoke from the tires totally engulfed the Nova as it turned from Main Street onto Pleasant Street, police said.

One police could see the car again, they pulled it over and charged the driver with:

  • Operating a at too slow a speed
  • Unsafew movement of a stopped vehicle
  • Causing unnecessary noise
  • Second-degree reckless endangerment

The driver is due in court on June 26, according to an arrest report.
