Why does your mom rock? My mother is not only my best friend but a person I strive to be more like each and everyday. She is the glue to our family, has the most gracious, loving, and accepting heart, and is the strongest woman I know. My mother is a retired special education teacher, teaching for 33 years total and 31 of those spent teaching right here in Middletown.

Growing up I watched her pour her heart into teaching and into her students. After a long day at work, she would come home and make sure dinner was on the table for us, help with any homework or anything that was needed, and then finally sit down and start the hours of work she took home with her every night. While there were rarely any tangible rewards for the hard work she did every day, that never stopped her from putting her all into each student that she taught.

My mother has always believed in both my brother and I and taught us that we can achieve anything we put our minds to. She has been the anchor for our family, coordinating family vacations, ensuring all our thank you cards were sent out in a timely fashion following a birthday or a holiday, and taught us so much through her own actions.

Her hospitable nature always makes others around her feel comfortable and welcomed. She is selfless and generous, as she has volunteered her time going on church missions trips, working at the local soup kitchen, and she readily donates items to local organizations in Middletown.

My mother has evolved from being a person I had to listen to, to a person I now turn to each and every day. She has dealt with tough losses throughout her life, burying her parents, a sibling, and numerous relatives. She has faced heartbreaking situations yet remains positive and optimistic, often times helping me to see the good sides to any problems I confide in her with.

My mother is no longer just a mom, but has evolved into a Mimi to her two (soon to be three) grandchildren. The unending love she has for my children, and the love they have for her, is apparent everyday. She is extremely patient, taking time to clean up spills that little hands made with a smile on her face, and with the ability to turn it into a game or a teaching moment. As blessed as I was to grow up with a mother like her, I am even more thankful that my children get to have such a strong role model and grow up knowing such an amazing woman.

Why do you feel your mom deserves the spotlight? My mother has always put the needs and wants of her children and those around her before herself. She is selfless and humble and has never once been in the spotlight before in her life. In fact, knowing my mother, this nomination may bring about feelings of unworthiness when in reality I cannot think of another person who deserves this nomination more than she does. I am so proud to call her my mother, and to share the story of such an amazing woman with the community around us.
