STAMFORD, CT — After months in jail, Kent Mawhinney, who faces a conspiracy to commit murder charge in the Jennifer Dulos case, posted bond Monday and was released from custody at Stamford Superior Court.

Mawhinney was escorted from the courthouse by his attorneys, Lee Gold and Jeremy Donnelly, at about noon without speaking to the swarm of reporters who were waiting for him outside. He was wearing a dark-colored suit and tie — with an American flag pin on the lapel — and a gray mask his attorneys brought for him.

He was arrested in January and held in lieu of bail of $2 million, for which he was unable to post bond. Earlier this month, his attorneys convinced a judge to lower the bond to $50,000 in cash and $196,000 in real estate collateral, which his attorneys said his parents would front.

Mawhinney is a Hartford-area attorney and former friend of the late Fotis Dulos, and he and Michelle Troconis, Fotis' ex-girlfriend, are accused of assisting in the murder Fotis' estranged wife, Jennifer Farber Dulos, in the spring of 2019. Jennifer Dulos vanished on May 24 of last year and is presumed dead; her body has not been found.

Fotis Dulos was charged with kidnapping and murder, but he died by suicide in January before he could face trial.

Troconis and Mawhinney are accused of trying to help Fotis Dulos establish what authorities believe was a fraudulent alibi following Jennifer Dulos' disappearance. The two suspects have pleaded not guilty.

Mawhinney's attorneys wrote in the motion requesting the lowered bond that their client's father is seriously ill in Florida, prompting Mawhinney to seek his release. He plans to travel to Florida to visit with his father, but the trip must meet court approval before he can leave Connecticut.

On Monday, Mawhinney was fitted for a GPS monitoring device he must wear above his ankle, similar to the one Troconis also must wear, and he had to turn over his passport.

His next court date has not yet been released; he had been scheduled to next appear on Dec. 24, but whether that date still applies is not known. Troconis' next court date is Nov. 13.
