NEW HAVEN, CT —New Haven police confirmed for Patch that a woman, described as a Yale New Haven Hospital nurse, was assaulted and robbed Tuesday evening in the Sherman/Tyler parking lot.

New Haven police spokesperson Christian Bruckhart said that it was just before 6 p.m. when cops were called to "the area of Sherman Avenue and the Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard" on the report of a robbery. The location was the city-owned parking lot. Bruckhart told Patch the woman was getting into her car when she was "robbed and assaulted."

She told police she was "robbed by a group of several people who attempted to steal her purse and car," he said. "They were unsuccessful in stealing the vehicle as it had a manual transmission and they did not know how to drive it, however they were able to take her purse."

Her injuries, albeit minor, Bruckhart said, were the result of her being punched and bitten.

"The victim sustained minor injuries in the robbery and assault; she was treated on scene by American Medical Response," he said.

"A short time later, police officers located the group, one of whom had the victim's identification and credit cards in his possession," Bruckhart said. "Two individuals, both juveniles, were arrested. Subsequent arrests are pending."

The lot, bounded on either side by Legion Avenue and MLK, is for YNHH employees. Patch learned after a call to YNHH Protective Services, which provides security for both the main campus on York Street and the Saint Raphael Campus, that it does not provide security at the city-owned lot.

A call to the parking manager for the Sherman-Tyler lot, Rodney Slaughter, was not immediately returned.

Patch also reached out to the City for comment.
