Long Wharf Theater Director Accused Of Sex Misconduct

The theater's artistic director has been put on administrative leave.

NEW HAVEN, CT — Long Wharf Theater's Artistic Director Gordon Edelstein has been placed on administrative leave after allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced. Four women spoke on the record about unwanted sexual contact by Edelstein who arrived at the theater in 2002, according to the New York Times.

One woman described being kissed by Edelstein and said she told him she didn't want a physical relationship, but later in the same night he kissed her and groped her breasts, according to the Times.

The nonprofit theater is located on Sargent Drive in New Haven and many of its productions are sent for Broadway or Off Broadway performances.

The times interviewed 24 current and former employees and collaborators of the theater and most said he was prone to sexually explicit language in the workplace.

Chairwoman of the Long Wharf board of trustees Laura Pappano told the times the theater immediately addressed incidents it knew about and the theater hadn't received complaints of sexual misconduct since 2006.
