Why does she rock? My mother rocks for so many reasons, I can’t possibly list them all! Of course, she is loving toward her family and kind to small animals, and when she sings, birds fly to her fingertips and squirrels and rabbits gather at her feet, with deer looking on from a distance. Oh, sorry, that’s Snow White.

Actually, my Mom (notice the capital M? It’s because she is THAT important), raised of 3 kids while also taking care of 2 ailing and bedridden parents until their death in the 1990’s. Since then she took over primary care of her brothers, who need a little extra assistance. As if that weren’t enough, she recently retired after over 35 years of exemplary service at the hospital, where she took care of “her guys” and made sure that everything was safe and secure. Now that she’s retired, she finds she has even less time than she used to! Even though we are all grown and married, she is still helping us out by taking care of our animals while we are away, bringing us food when we are sick and just being an ear, when needed.

Why does she deserve the spotlight? Trying to come up with specific stories is difficult, because so many wonderful memories are competing for center stage. As I come up with “This one time...,” at least another 2 or 3 pop into my head that want to be told as well. While growing up, we didn’t have a lot of extra money, but we certainly had a lot of love. I can still remember Mom making up our dinner and sometimes I would want seconds. I never realized (until later) that Mom sometimes cut her portions so that we had plenty.

When we had friends over, I can remember my sister’s friends saying she loved to come over our house, because we would eat dessert first! “Life is uncertain, eat dessert first”, was one of Mom’s favorite sayings. Of course we didn’t always eat dessert first, or even have it at all, but that was still a very fun time when we had friends visiting.

One of her favorite sayings right now is “I know how this works, I’m a carpenter’s daughter.” It’s become quite the comedic line these days, and Mom is always in for the joke. Her easygoing manner is second to none, never really getting too riled up even when her brother is at his worst. I can only hope that someday I can have that same aplomb. All in all, I can’t think of a single reason why she should NOT be honored by being in the “Mom Rocks” spotlight.
