Car Winds Up Over A Tree During Stormy Weekend In Tolland

Storms and crashes marred the weekend in Tolland.

TOLLAND, CT — Storms and traffic accidents kept Tolland responders busy over the weekend.

On Monday morning, Eversource Energy was reporting fewer than three power outages remaining in Tolland, but that was not the case over the weekend.

Sunday's storms hit the town hardest trees and wires were down on South River Road, Merrow Road and Rhodes Road, and Merrow Road and Tolland Green.

In one bizarre sequence, a sport utility vehicle wound up on top of a fallen tree. The image, when released by fire officials, spurred a plethora of speculation from Facebook traffic experts. State police had yet to complete a crash report on the incident.

One commenter took the high road.

"Angel was watching over him," she said. "Better to see the tree under his car than on top."

On Saturday, Mountain Spring Road at the Old Post Road intersection was closed after wires came down across the road.

No injuries were reported.

Meanwhile, as if the storm didn't cause enough problems, crashes also prompted emergency responses.

On Sunday evening, on the westbound side of Interstate 84 in the area of the Mountain Spring Road overpass, a tractor-trailer split in half. Fire officials said the trailer slid off the truck's hitch. No injuries were reported.

Earlier in the day, a car spun out and wound up with heavy rear-end damage on I-84 eastbound, prior to exit 68. One person was evaluated for minor injuries, fire officials said.
