VERNON, CT — A fire broke out at the Cornerstone Foundation's New Hope House Homeless Shelter early Friday morning, police and shelter officials said.

The call came in at 3:16 a.m. Cornerstone Programs and Operations Director Alexis Flint said she was alerted by a security monitoring service and shelter director Jenn Kirchmeier confirmed the presence of smoke on the shelter's second floor.

Police said the origin was a bathroom fan.

Police and firefighters went to the scene and all 26 residents were safely evacuated as the fire was quickly contained to one room, Flint said.

There was minimal smoke and water damage, she said.

A total of 18 adults and eight children were in the shelter and Assistant Fire Chief Rob Babcock coordinated with the American Red Cross for immediate assistance and temporary lodging.

Upon seeing Cornerstone's social media post about the fire, Josh Virkler of LuAnn's Bakery not only checked on the shelter, but contacted local electrician Kevin Gottier, who assessed and addressed the electrical issues and power was restored to the unaffected areas, Flint said.

Virkler then returned with breakfast for the staff and residents, Flint said.

"We are incredibly grateful for the rapid and selfless actions of our staff, emergency services, and community members," Flint said. "Their collective efforts ensured the safety and well-being of our residents during this challenging time."

Cornerstone will continue to provide updates on the progress of repairs and the return of families to the New Hope House, Flint said.
