COVID-19 School Guidelines For Polk County Students

Polk County Public Schools wants to provide a healthy school environment by the safety protocols implemented for the 2021-2022 school year.

POLK COUNTY, FL — Protocols to offer a healthy environment for the new school year during the coronavirus pandemic have been implemented at Polk County Public Schools, according to a news release.

School officially starts August 10, and this school year might feel close to normal for the students with a few changes. Faces masks are optional for students and staff to wear. However, the Florida Department of Health in Polk County recommends students and staff wear face coverings while in school. Students, staff and visitors will not be required to complete temperature screening upon arrival on campuses, Polk County Public Schools District said.

If a student or staff member does experience COVID-like symptoms, they should stay home, school board staff said. They may return when one of the following criteria is met:

  • Ten days have passed, they are free of a fever for 24 hours without medication and symptoms are improving.
  • Signed medical clearance is provided for the person.
  • A person with no known exposure to someone with COVID-19 has proof of a negative COVID test. At-home tests will not be accepted.)

Students who participate in athletics will be able to play their chosen sports during the 2021-2022 school year. Pep rallies will only take place if they can be held outside.

The guidelines could be changed at any time during the school year depending on recommendations from the health department, school board members said.
