Salmonella Scare: Publix Recalls Premium Pancake, Waffle Mixes

Publix is recalling its waffle and pancake mixes after learning milk powder provided by a supplier may contain salmonella.

LAKELAND, FL — Publix shoppers may want to check their pantries for the Lakeland-based grocery chain’s breakfast mixes. The company has issued a voluntary recall on its Publix Premium Pancake and Waffle Mixes after being informed by a supplier milk powder used in the products may be contaminated with salmonella.

Salmonella is a bacterium that is known to cause abdominal cramps, fever and diarrhea. Most people who are exposed to it recover without the need for treatment. Some people, however, experience symptoms so severe that hospitalization is required, Publix explained in its recall alert. People with compromised immune systems, infants and the elderly are at the highest risk for severe reactions.

Products included in the recall were sold at Publix stores throughout Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee. All lot codes of these products are included in the recall:

  • Publix Premium Banana-Flavored Chocolate Chip Pancake & Waffle Mix, 16 ounce – GTIN 4141503503
  • Publix Premium Pumpkin Pancake & Waffle Mix, 16 ounce – 4141503703
  • Publix Premium Blueberry Flavored Pancake & Waffle Mix, 16 ounce – 4141503603

"As part of our commitment to food safety, potentially impacted product has been removed from all store shelves,” said Maria Brous, Publix media and community relations director. "To date, there have been no reported cases of illness.”

Consumers who purchased products included in the recall are asked to return packages to their local store for a full refund. Customers with questions may call 1-800-242-1227.
