Georgia Weather Alert: Severe Thunderstorms Likely Across Region

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch Monday for much of Georgia, including the Atlanta metro.

ATLANTA, GA β€” The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch Monday for most of Georgia, effective until 5 p.m., along with a tornado warning for parts of Paulding County, as a severe squall line approached the area.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm front, which is capable of producing tornadoes and extensive straight-line wind damage, was located near Dallas at 11:10 a.m. and moving east at 50 mph. The warning is in effect until 11:30 a.m.

A severe thunderstorm watch means that conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms. The weather service issued the severe thunderstorm watch at 10:50 a.m. Monday.

Areas included in the severe thunderstorm watch are the city of Atlanta, plus Cobb, Dekalb, Gwinnettand Fulton counties.

Scattered to numerous strong to severe thunderstorms are expected over north and central Georgia starting late morning into Monday evening. Damaging winds, large hail, a few tornadoes and frequent lightning will be the main hazards, says the weather service. Heavy rain can also be expected with flooding possible.

When a watch is issued, you should go about your normal activities but keep an eye to the sky and an ear to the National Weather Service’s weather radio or local radio and television stations for further updates and possible warnings.

Another round of severe storms is possible on Wednesday, forecasters say.

The week's forecast:

Monday: Showers and thunderstorms likely before 1pm, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm between 1pm and 4pm, then showers and thunderstorms likely after 4pm. Some of the storms could be severe and produce heavy rainfall. High near 74. South wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Monday night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1am, then a slight chance of showers between 1am and 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 59. Southwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 80. West wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph.

Tuesday night: A 10 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5am. Mostly clear, with a low around 59. West wind around 5 mph becoming south after midnight.

Wednesday: Occasional showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 8am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 76. South wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Wednesday night: Showers and thunderstorms likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 49. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Thursday: A 20 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 61.

Thursday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 41.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 59.
