An Alabama serviceman has returned home for Veterans Day, and was able to surprise his young daughter by showing up at her Buckhead school unannounced following a seven-month deployment.

Maj. Rich Peace has been in Afghanistan flying F-16s for the majority of the year, but he was able to come home and surprise his daughter Jada, a first grade student at Morris Brandon Elementary School. Jada’s class was in the middle of a Read-A-Thon when Peace made his appearance.

Once the pair were reunited, Jada gave her father a drawing she said would help him stay safe while deployed overseas. Peace hopes he won’t need the drawing for some time, as he hopes to be at home with his family for a long stretch.
