Part of Berlin Wall Coming to Buckhead School

The Cold War relic will be dedicated during a ceremony which will be held later this week.

A section of the infamous Berlin wall which divided the capital of Germany for nearly 30 years will find a new home in Buckhead, Atlanta InTown reports.

The imposing gray concrete slab which now stands at the Atlanta International School will be formally dedicated during a ceremony to be held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 20. A representative of the German government will join Atlanta City Council President Caesar Mitchell and the International Affairs Director of the City of Atlanta Claire Angelle at the dedication.

Headmaster Kevin Glass told Atlanta InTown that the 10 foot by three foot section of the wall is a chilling reminder of what can happen when international communications fail, and hopes the symbol of division will remind students of the world’s duty to ensure that no such divisions happen again.

The wall was built in 1961 by communist East Germany to keep its people from fleeing to the capitalist enclave of West Berlin. The wall was rendered obsolete when the East German government ended travel restrictions to West Berlin, West Germany, and the rest of the world in November of 1989.

Germany was officially reunited as one country on Oct. 3, 1990.
