Inclusion in the program is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities.

More than 3,900 candidates were named; the list will be whittled down to 560 semifinalists in April.

The Commission on Presidential Scholars, which is appointed by the President, will make the final selections of the scholars.

The commission will select a young man and young woman from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and U.S. students living abroad, and 15 at-large students and up to 20 students from creative/performing arts.

Scholars will be announced in May.

Brosofsky is the son of Michael and Laura Brosofsky of Buford.
