Suspect in Custody for Murder of Brian Whitfield (Updated)

Whitfield was found dead in the driveway of his east Gwinnett County home on Dec. 6.

There has been an arrest in the home invasion murder of Brian Whitfield, who was found shot to death the driveway of his Gwinnett County home on Dec. 6.

Gwinnett Police said Marquavis Benton, 26, was arrested in Griffin on Friday. A Griffin resident, Benton was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail late Friday night, according to jail records. He is being held without bond.

Benton is charged with felony murder and armed robbery, Gwinnett Police said in a press release.

The Griffin Police Department assisted the GCPD Homicide Unit in arresting Benton around 4 p.m. Friday.

Whitfield, 45, was found shot to death in his driveway at 1735 Flowery Branch Road in unincorporated Gwinnett County near the Dacula/Auburn area, the victim of a home invasion, according to police. The incident occurred around 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6.

A passerby called 911 after seeing the Whitfield lying in the driveway of the residence.

Police said Whitfield’s pickup truck — a distinctive 2005 Dodge Ram “Rumblebee” model — was stolen after the shooting. It was recovered earlier this week in Atlanta.
