DeKalb County Arts School Accepting Applications, Offering Info Sessions

DeKalb School of the Arts enhances the education of students grades 8 through 12 with a variety of arts programs.

For students that wish to develop their artistic abilities, enrolling in DeKalb School of the Arts can be that next step toward a career in a creative field.

As part of the DeKalb County school district’s magnet program, DeKalb School of the Arts aims to provide students with “the highest quality education through academics and the arts.” The school achieves their mission through a varied artistic curriculum on top of a rigorous academic program that includes both accelerated and advanced placement classes.

Ranked by the 2013 College and Career Ready Performance Index as the fifth best school in Georgia, DeKalb School for the Arts allows students to take classes on disciplines like vocal and instrumental music, dance, drama, creative writing, media broadcast, visual arts, and technical theater.

The school will host several open house information sessions this winter:

  • Jan. 10 at 10 a.m.
  • Jan. 13 at 6 p.m.
  • Jan. 17 at 10 a.m.
  • Jan. 20 at 6 p.m.
  • Jan. 24 at 10 a.m.
  • Jan. 27 at 6 p.m.

Applications for the 2015-2016 school year are due on Friday, Feb. 6, by 2 p.m. Students must submit all application materials directly to the school by delivering them in person or by mailing to: DeKalb School of the Arts, 1192 Clarendon Road, Avondale Estates, GA 30002, Attn: Application Committee.

As a part of their application, students will submit a creative portfolio and audition in two artistic disciplines, one of which must be a performance art. The school holds auditions during the week of Feb. 24 through 28 after regular school hours.

Other application components include teacher recommendations, records of academic achievement and interviews with DeKalb School for the Arts educators and administrators.
