'F-R-A-N-K-E-N-S-T-E-I-N' the Winning Word in Douglas Co. Spelling Bee

Turner Middle School eighth-grader Briana Echols spelled “topography” and “Frankenstein” correctly to win the Douglas County School System spelling bee Thursday at the county courthouse.

The school system shared the news on Facebook Friday.

Echols finished ahead of runner-up Alana Miles of North Douglas Elementary School.

“I’m still nervous. My legs are shaking,” Echols said in a Douglas County Sentinel article. “I studied with my dad and my sister helped me. We went through all the words (and) the words that I thought were the hardest to me, I wrote them down.”

Echols moves on to the District 4 Spelling Bee on Feb. 28 at the DeKalb County Board of Education.
