Dunwoody Jewish Center Collects Over 1,000 Books for Children

The Marcus Jewish Community Center will accept donations through Nov. 30.

Through Project GIVE, a community action project coordinated at its annual book festival, the Marcus Jewish Community Center was able to provide more than 1,000 gently used books to metro-area students

The Jewish Center, which collected book donations from festival guests and center visitors, made a bulk donation to the Atlanta Jewish Coalition to Literacy. With its help, the books made it to area schools where extra resources are needed the most.

The coalition also brings volunteer reading tutors into classrooms to help students struggling with reading comprehension.

“Tutors choose the books to read with their children, and once the child has mastered a book, the book is gifted to the student,” said Project GIVE Co-Chair Kim Urbach in a release.

“These tutors, as well as the books, are making such a difference in the lives of these students,” added Co-Chair Susie Sommer. “Not only are they receiving the present of a book, but they are gaining the gift of being able to read it, independently.”
