Dunwoody Nature Center Offers School Break Camp for Kids

With three camp sessions, the Nature Center provides young students on school break with engaging activities centered around the outdoors.

For many kids, a week off from school can mean turning into a vegetable in front of the television, especially if parents can’t secure time off from work to supervise.

One way to keep kids active during school breaks is through the Break Camp at the Dunwoody Nature Center, designed to keep children learning and having fun during their time out of the classroom.

Open to children Pre-K through fifth grade, the Thanksgiving and Winter Break Camps will show campers the wonders of the winter climate, and the animals, plants and habitats that thrive in Dunwoody Park during the chilly months.

Among the many learning opportunities the Nature Center’s camp offers are trail walks, arts and crafts, science experiments, games, free play, and--of course--snack time. Camp leaders will teach children the values of waste reduction and water conservation, however, so it is recommended that parents pack lunch and drinks in reusable containers.

Professional educators with backgrounds in science, environmental education and art make up the camp’s team of counselors and instructors, and a medic trained in CPR and First Aid is on hand during each camp session.

Activities are scheduled in half-day sessions for children between the ages of 3 and 4, and full-day for kindergarten through fifth-grade students. Nature-enthusiasts too old to participate as a camper may apply to be a junior counselor.

The Nature Center, located at 5343 Roberts Drive in Dunwoody, will hold its Thanksgiving Break Camp on Monday, Nov. 24, and Tuesday, Nov. 25, and will offer two winter sessions: on Dec. 22 and Dec 23, as well as Dec. 29 and Dec. 30.

Camp hours are 9:30 a.m. through 3:30 p.m., with half-day sessions only lasting until 12:30 p.m. Early drop-off and late pick-up are available to accommodate working parents, extending camp time activities from 8:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Extra fees apply per camper.

For full-day campers, registration costs $90 for members of the Nature Center, and $100 for non-members. Pre-K campers can register for half-day camp sessions for $55 for members, and $65 for non-members.

Registration for Break Camp is only available online. Sign up for a spot in the Thanksgiving weekend session here, or one of the two winter sessions here.
