Google Fiber Coming to Smyrna

The city officially made the announcement on Tuesday. The planning process will take several more months, the city said.

Smyrna citizens will be able to tap into ultra-high speed internet thanks to the new a new fiber-optic cable network which will be built in the city, according to an announcement made on Tuesday.

The City of Smyrna says that it has been chosen to receive Google Fiber, a service which promises internet over 100 times faster than currently available high-speed broadband networks. Google Fiber users can download huge amounts of data, such as HD movies, in a matter of seconds. Google Fiber customers can also access HD TV channels and shows like a regular cable or satellite subscriber.

“We want to set up our residents for success in this connected world – from the way they live and work to the benefits connectivity offers to education, and beyond,” said Mayor Max Bacon in a statement. “Today, we take a giant step in that direction.”

Now that Google has chosen Smyrna, the two parties will collaborate on the design of a new fiber-optic cable network which will carry the Google Fiber service. This extremely detailed process will take several months, after which construction of the network will begin in earnest.
