Residents Hope to Save Civil War Era House Slated for Demolition

The City of Smyrna is looking to knock down the home it purchased in 2004, ironically to save it from the wrecking ball.

The Cobb County Historic Preservation Commission is hoping to drum up support to save a historic Mableton home which could soon be demolished by the City of Smyrna.

The Hooper-Turner House, built in the middle of the 19th century, now sits along Oakdale Road in Mableton. The home was purchased by the City of Smyrna in 2004 for $145,000 in order to keep it from being torn down, but the city has not been able to sell the property. Concerns about the structural integrity of the home, as well as threats of mold, have forced the city to consider cutting its losses and demolishing the building.

Residents who wish to save the Hooper-Turner House are asked to attend tonight’s Historic Preservation Commission meeting, which will be held at 6 p.m. at the Cobb County Government Building at 100 Cherokee St. in Marietta Square. Supporters of the home should also wear red as a silent show of solidarity to save the home.

City-Data.com currently values the home at $67,230, and values the land it sits on at $49,600. The City of Smyrna wanted to sell the property for $159,000 in 2010, but no such deal came to be.

It is rumored that the home served as a hospital during the Civil War, but no historic documentation has ever been found to back up that claim.
