Some Smyrna firefighters were recognized for their quick action and top-notch skill in rescuing four people trapped inside vehicles involved in a nasty accident late last year.

On Dec. 1 at 7:45 a.m., a gray Mazda RX8 drove off Windy Hill Road near Dixie Avenue, rode up the angled support of the CSX railroad overpass, then landed on top of three other vehicles at the intersection of Windy Hill and Atlanta roads.

Smyrna fire engines 1, and 2, Truck 4, Battalion 1, and Chief 2 were dispatched to the scene, and quickly discovered four people who were seriously injured and trapped in the affected vehicles. The firefighters went to work extricating the injured people from their vehicles, making sure not to injure them further as they were removed from the wreckage and taken to waiting ambulances.

In recognition of the firefighters’ response, the department presented the C-shift with the “Golden Axe” award on Friday. The Golden Axe symbolizes the firefighters’ commitment to the department’s core values of accountability, commitment, community, Integrity, and service.
