A grandfather’s wish resulted in six new elevated garden beds at the Community Garden @ Snellville Saturday.

The new planters are part of an Eagle Scout project by 17-year-old Brookwood High School student Michael Habetler who recruited 12 fellow Scouts to help.

Habetler said his grandfather was an avid gardener and left him $250 to be used for a gardening project when he passed away. It was during a trip to Briscoe Park, where the community garden is located, that Habetler said he knew where – and how - to spend the $250.

“This is in honor of my grandfather,” Habetler said Saturday. “Since there really isn’t a place near me for a garden, I think this (location) was perfect.”

Kurt Schulz, who manages the garden and was helping Habetler Saturday, said the new beds are a welcome addition.

“It’s good to see all these young people – it’s a combined effort,” he said. “It’s all for the good of the garden.”

A pavilion is also being built at the garden as a place for educational demonstrations and should be completed within a month.
