Firefighters Rescue Horse Unable To Move From Stall

Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services called in crews with the Milton Fire Department to help in the operation.

It took two fire departments and a wrecker to help a horse suffering from an arthritic knee out of its stall.

Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services responded to the animal rescue call around 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16 at Easter Hill Farm at 882 Ranchwood Trail in unincorporated Woodstock.

Firefighters arrived onto the scene and found the horse lying in the stall and unable to get up, Cherokee fire spokesperson Tim Cavender said in a press release.

Horse owner Jeanne D’Andre said she tried without success for an hour to get the horse up and out of its stall. That forced her to call 911 for assistance.

Cherokee fire officials were also unsuccessful in its bid to get the horse up, so they called in the Milton Fire Department’s Animal Rescue Team for assistance.

The rescuers were able to slide the horse outside. Once outdoors, a harness was placed around the horse’s body and connected to the boom of a wrecker belonging to Canton-based Mauldin’s Wrecker Service.

The horse was eventually raised so she could stand on her own, Cavender said.

Katherine Davis, who boards the horse at the farm, said the horse suffers from an arthritic knee, which “sometimes prevents her from standing back up once she lies down.”

D’Andre aded the horse is 35 years old and she‘s owned it for 30 of those years. This is the fourth time since May that the horse has had trouble getting up on its own volition, Cherokee County fire added.

Once the horse was stable, D’Andre thanked all the rescuers for their help.

“You’ll never know how much this means to me,” she added.
