Woodstock Wins Cherokee Chamber Recycling Challenge

The city of Woodstock has won the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce’s 3rd annual Mayor’s Recycling Challenge.

The initiative, which is part of the Chamber’s Going Green Initiative, encouraged residents in Cherokee’s cities to recycle during the months of June and July.

The winning city for total pounds recycled, as well as the winning city for most pounds collected per capita, were announced during the Chamber’s September Good Morning Cherokee breakfast meeting. North Metro Waste and Waste Management partnered with the Chamber on this event.

Woodstock collected the most recycling which totaled 374,322 pounds. Woodstock was followed by city of Canton at 158,622 pounds; Ball Ground at 109,000 pounds; Waleska at 96,760 pounds; Holly Springs at 61,660 pounds; and Nelson at 10,820 pounds. The combined total collected by all the cities was 811,184 pounds which is a three percent increase over last year.

For the third consecutive year, Waleska collected the most recycling per capita with 138.4 pounds per resident, as determined based on 2013 U.S. Census population estimates. Additional per capita totals included Ball Ground at 73.5 pounds/resident; Woodstock at 13.9 pounds/resident; Nelson at 8.2 pounds/resident; Canton at 6.6 pounds/resident; and Holly Springs at 6.3 pounds/resident.

The Going Green initiative encourages the community to implement green practices that conserve community resources while helping businesses thrive.
