ALGONQUIN, IL — A group of parents and students rallied outside the Algonquin-based Community Unit District 300 center office on Tuesday, telling district officials they'd like to students back in classrooms instead of learning online. Meanwhile, the District 300 school board is expected to meet on Friday to address the school districts' plan for learning in the second quarter of the school year.

Those at Tuesday's rally said remote learning is bad for children's mental health, since they have been isolated and not able to see their classmates; and is not as effective, especially for younger children, the Northwest Herald is reporting.

This past summer, the school district joined several other suburban districts as it opted to move classes online as a way to slow the spread of COVID-19 and keep its students safe. Remote learning has been in session for almost a month for District 300.

During a meeting following the rally, District 300 superintendent Fred Heid said administrators are recommending elementary, middle and high school students switch to a hybrid schedule beginning on Oct. 13, which means half of the students will be on campus on any given day while the other half will work remotely, according to the Northwest Herald. The school board is set to meet Friday starting at 8 a.m. where a formal vote is expected on the hybrid schedule.
