Kane Co. Nonprofits To Share About $3M In Coronavirus Relief

KANE COUNTY, IL — More than 30 nonprofit organizations in Kane County are set to split about $3 million from the county’s $93 million in federal coronavirus-relief funding, according to a report by the Daily Herald.

The Kane County Board in September set aside about $2 million to support nonprofits struggling amid the coronavirus pandemic. The board on Tuesday transferred an additional $1.05 million into a fund that is expected to provide grants to dozens of nonprofits throughout the county, the report states.

Kane County officials must allocate all $93 million in federal coronavirus funding by Dec. 30 or send back any money they haven’t spent.

Hesed House, the Aurora homeless shelter that is the largest in the county, is set to receive about $800,000 after the county board increased its nonprofit funding pool, the Daily Herald reports. That grant will help the shelter winterize a makeshift shelter to house more than 100 people over the coming months.

The Northern Illinois Food Bank in Geneva is set to receive $365,000, while the Association of Individual Development will receive $348,000, the report states. Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley is line to get a grant worth $174,000, while PADS of Elgin is expected to get $116,000, the Daily Herald reports.

Lazarus House, which offers shelter and assistance to homeless people at its St. Charles facility, could receive up to $132,000 after the board approved a request for organizations to seek reimbursements for costs associated with caring for homeless people amid the pandemic, the report states.

Despite fears that $93 million of coronavirus relief would not be enough for Kane County, officials last month discovered the county would have about a $7 million surplus even if it approved all grant applications it received.

Kane County is set to keep about $51 million of the federal funds to cover its own pandemic-related expenses, while local municipalities are expected to receive tens of millions to help them offset related debts.

The recent $1 million transfer to nonprofits chips away at the county’s federal-funding surplus, but officials must finish allocating the funding in less than 50 days while dealing with much change in county leadership.

Several members of the board’s allocation committee will finish their terms in the coming weeks, and Democrat Corinne Pierog will take over as chair of the board, replacing incumbent Republican Chairman Chris Lauzen.

Barb Jeffers, who has led the Kane County Health Department for the past 15 years, is set to retire at the end of November.
