Local Health Officials Warn Of 'Diamond Shruumz' Illnesses

A product sold in dispensaries and smoke and vape shops has lead to several sicknesses and hospitalizations, according to health officials.

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — Health officials want local residents to be aware of serious illnesses linked to consumption of "Diamond Shrummz-brand chocolate bars, cones and gummies.

Officials with the McHenry County Department of Health on Wednesday made the public aware of the recent advisory from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As of June 17, the product, which is marketed as containing a proprietary blend of mushrooms and sold online and at various retail locations, including dispensaries and smoke and vape shops, has sickened 26 people across 16 states.

The product has also lead to 16 people seeking medical attention at a hospital, according to a news release from the McHenry County Department of Health.

No deaths have been reported, and no illnesses have been reported in Illinois as of Wednesday, local public health officials said.

The cause of these illnesses remains unknown.

People who have consumed the product have reported a wide range of severe symptoms, including gastrointestinal effects like nausea, abdominal pain, and vomiting; central nervous system effects such as sedation, seizures, and tremors; and cardiovascular effects including abnormal heart rates, blood pressure changes, flushing and excessive sweating.

Several individuals have required intensive medical intervention, including mechanical ventilation. Health officials are advising anyone who may have consumed any Diamond Shruumz product, and is experiencing any of the above listed symptoms, to seek immediate medical attention or call the Poison Control Help Line at 1-800-222-1222.

The CDC, as well as the Food and Drug Administration and America’s Poison Centers, are investigating the reports of severe acute illnesses following the consumption of Diamond Shruumz edible products.

Public health authorities are encouraging residents to avoid buying, eating, selling or serving any Diamond Shruumz brand chocolate bars, cones, or gummies and to dispose of any products they may already have.

The MCDH urges the community to be aware of the risks associated with consuming mushroom-containing edible products marketed with claims of physical or psychoactive effects. These products may contain harmful undisclosed, improperly formulated, or unapproved ingredients.

Store these products safely away from children, as they may mistake them for candy. Consumers are also encouraged to report any adverse events related to these products to FDA MedWatch.
