MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — A 40-year-old Crystal Lake man has been found guilty of sending sexual images through text message, authorities said.

During a bench trial Monday, McHenry County Judge Mark Gerhardt found William Mitchell guilty of a charge of non-consensual dissemination of private sexual images, according to a news release from the McHenry County State's Attorney's Office.

Police launched an investigation into Mitchell in August 2020. At that time, police learned Mitchell sent a "compromising photo to a mutual friend without the victim's consent," according to the news release.

When the victim became aware of this, she contacted police. Authorities used interviews and cell phone records to pin Mitchell to the crime, according to prosecutors.

Mitchell is set to be sentenced on Aug. 19.
