DARIEN, IL — Getting a high school diploma with your family watching is a rite of passage. It's an achievement 13 years in the making (yes, kindergarten counts).

But an outside chance exists that families won't be allowed to attend this year's commencement at Hinsdale South High School.

Nick Chavarria, activities director at South, has been holding virtual meetings with a task force of 40 seniors, who have been providing input on events such as graduation.

"We know the seniors want to graduate together, but the parents may not be there," Chavarria said in an interview. "We want nothing more than to do a standard ceremony that everyone has come to expect. We're trying to work with our local and state partners on how to do that safely. We should have information really soon on where we are."

He said the school is waiting for final guidance on public health and safety for an event such as a graduation, particularly how many people will be allowed in a venue.

"Once we get those numbers, we can develop a plan," Chavarria said.
