DEERFIELD, IL — His smiling face is noticed by all along his Deerfield route and now the local community wants to help their mailman in his time of need. His name is Victor, and according to the organizers of a GoFundMe campaign in his honor, he is known for his "extreme kindness."

"Brave enough to serve our community during a very dangerous time, Victor now needs our HELP as he fights for his life with COVID-19," organizers of the GoFundMe said on the fundraising page. "Rain, sleet, snow, or pandemic, Victor has always been a smiling face in our community."

According to the post, Victor is in critical condition and has been sick since Oct. 2. His family told the organizers that he is fighting hard. Unable to visit him in his hospital room, they held up signs and cheered for him Tuesday from the parking lot outside the hospital.

"Nurses and the doctor who was inside his room waving at us. Giving us thumbs up. Giving us hope," his wife, Jo, told Patch. "We’re fighting this and not giving up. Our family is very thankful for everyone being supportive to us on this very difficult time. We appreciate everyone. Please send our thank you."
