Former Elgin Deputy Fire Chief Dies After Catching Coronavirus

Bill Freiberg, who retired in 2003 as deputy chief of the Elgin Fire Department, died Tuesday after contracting COVID-19 last month.

ELGIN, IL — Former Elgin Deputy Fire Chief Bill Freiberg died Tuesday at Sherman Hospital from COVID-19 complications, according to fire officials. He was 74.

Freiberg was taken to Sherman Hospital on Nov. 27, the day after Thanksgiving, to be treated for COVID-19 symptoms, Fire Chief Robb Cagann told the Elgin Courier-News.

Cagann hailed Freiberg’s “passion for the fire service” and his commitment to community service since his retirement, the Courier-News reports.

Freiberg retired from the Elgin Fire Department in 2003 after serving for 27 years. He spent much of the past two decades as an active member of the Elgin Retired Firefighters Association and was highly involved with the Elgin Fire Barn No. 5 Museum, officials said in a Facebook post Wednesday afternoon.

“We offer our sincere condolences to the entire Freiberg family during this difficult time,” the post reads.
