Excessive Heat Warning Issued for Thursday, Friday

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for Thursday afternoon through Friday evening for the Chicago area.

Temperatures are expected to hit the mid-90s on Thursday and Friday and the maximum heat indexes could be between 105 and 115 degrees.

“Temperatures this high could lead to heat-related illnesses with prolonged exposure,” according to the National Weather Service.

Elderly adults, small children and pets are especially susceptible to heat-related issues.

The National Weather Service provides the following tips to stay safe in the heat:

  • Try to limit outdoor activities to the morning and evening avoid outdoor activity in the afternoon
  • If you have to be outdoors, wear light colored, loose-fitting clothing and drink plenty of water.
  • Never leave young children or pets in a vehicle. This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in the matter of minutes.
  • Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke
