Zinc Bromide Spill Prompts HazMat Response At Argonne

Lab officials said the spill was in one of the buildings at the laboratory, and there was no threat to anyone and no one was exposed.

LEMONT, IL — A hazardous materials response was reported at Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont on Friday due to a small spill of zinc bromide, Head of Media Relations Christopher Kramer told Patch.

Kramer said the spill was in one of the buildings at the laboratory, and there was no threat to anyone and no one was exposed.

The spill was cleaned up with absorbent pads, and the lab is back to regular operations, he said. There is no risk to the public.

According to the National Institutes of Health, zinc bromide is corrosive, an irritant and an environmental hazard. It is used in medicine and photography.

No one was injured in a previous hazmat incident at Argonne in July.
