250 Jobs Lost As Montgomery Plant Cuts Soap Manufacturing

The losses offset potential new jobs offered by the sale of the former Butterball plant.

MONTGOMERY, IL — A Montgomery manufacturing plant this week confirmed it will cut 250 jobs by September. VVF Illinois Services LLC said it will permanently shut down bar soap production at the plant, 2000 Aucutt Road, according to WSPY News. The plant has been at the location since 2009.

The news comes just weeks after Carl Buddig Inc., announced its purchase of the former Butterball plant in Montgomery, a deal that could bring 250 to 300 jobs to the village.

The Butterball plant closed in July, taking with it 600 jobs.

The VVF facility currently employs 310 people. Some of those positions will be transferred to other VVF locations in Missouri, Kansas and Ohio, according to WSPY, leaving about 50 employees at the Montgomery site.

A decline in the popularity of bar soap was a factor in the company's decision, WSPY reported.
