NORTHBROOK, IL — Last month was a busy one for the Northbrook Police Department. Officers responded to 40 vehicle burglaries, 10 vehicle trespasses and five stolen vehicles. Similar crimes have been reported in neighboring municipalities in recent months.

On Friday alone, there were nine burglaries to cars in the village. Police say in all the cases the cars were left unlocked, some with valuables inside the cars.

Police are encouraging residents to never leave a vehicle unlocked, even if it is at rest for a short amount of time. It is also advised that people should also take valuables inside rather than leaving them in a vehicle. If something has to be left in a vehicle, it is best to place them in a trunk prior to arriving at a destination, according to NPD.

  • Inquire About Anti-Theft Options: When purchasing a vehicle, ask about anti-theft options such as steering column locks, alarms, and switches that interrupt the fuel and electronic systems.
  • Keep Vehicle Information Safe: Maintain the car's Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • and a complete description in a safe place at home.
