KANE COUNTY, IL — The Kane County Adult Justice Center went into lockdown Thursday after two people being held at the facility tested positive for the coronavirus and at least four others showed related symptoms, Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain said.

A man being held at the jail had a temperature of more than 100 degrees on Tuesday, prompting the sheriff’s office to place that man’s unit on lockdown, Hain said in a news release. Medical staff on Thursday found two other people in that unit had temperatures over 100 degrees.

After two of the three men with fevers tested positive for the coronavirus via rapid tests, medical staff tested everyone being held in the Kane County jail — 413 as of Friday morning — for coronavirus-related symptoms, Hain said. Three more men had fevers over 100 degrees in the unit that was locked down starting Tuesday, according to the sheriff.

The entire Kane County Adult Justice Center was locked down Thursday shortly after those tests were conducted, the release states. The facility will be sanitized with an ozone machine, and common areas, including the kitchen and laundry areas, will be deep cleaned, Hain said.

People being held at the facility received N-95 masks and will have more access to computer tablets during the lockdown, but they will not be allowed to leave for court hearings or other appointments, Hain said.

The positive tests announced Friday are the first coronavirus cases among people being held at the jail since the outbreak started in March, according to the sheriff. “We are confident that we have done all we could to keep the virus out of our jail for the past six months, but always recognized that we would be naïve to believe it would never make its way in,” Hain said in the release.
